1964 ALFA ROMEO GTC - £POA
Alfa Romeo GTC step front convertible chassis number AR 755191 was manufactured 1964 in LHD form and first registered overseas. It was imported into the UK from Italy and first registered here on 1/8/73, as recorded on the old style logbook in my possession. A change to its present attractive but non-transferable registration number OLD 13 is likewise recorded on 13/5/76. Starting life as a standard Bertone 105 Coupe body shell , it is one of c. 1000 open 2+2 cars produced/converted when new for Alfa Romeo by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan. The original Touring i.d. plate is still riveted below the chassis number. A letter from Alfa Romeo (GB) confirms that the date of build was 31/12/64.
I bought this car in running order, for my own use, May 2022. The V5 I was given showed no change of Registered Keeper since 1976. I have a 12 month tax disc issued In July 1997, but have no other evidence of its use by the previous owner during his long ownership. I am an experienced restorer and the accompanying photographs show that I have put considerable effort into removing non-original modifications ( e.g. incorrect lower front panel and rear panel modified to accept later rear lights ) and repairing/ renewing the floors, rear inner arches and other parts of the structure where necessary.: Structurally the car is rot free and in excellent condition. To my own taste, I have re-sinned the doors in aluminium and intend also to re-skin the bonnet.
The car was not in “standard” condition when I bought it, having already been converted to RHD and equipped with the dashboard and instruments of a RHD 2 lire GTV .The front and rear suspension and steering had been overhauled and are in very good condition. While originally equipped with single line line Dunlop brakes with one servo, a previous owner has also converted the car to dual master cylinder and twin servos serving dual line ATE brakes. For these and other reasons and since GTC “projects” are rarely available in any condition, I believe the car would suit a buyer who would like to return it to original LHD specification, or one who values the RHD conversion and welcomes some or all of the other modifications. At. present the engine, gearbox and rear axle have been removed and the car is finished in primer, with the exception of the engine compartment re-finished in Rosso 130. as shown. The car is available fully repainted at extra cost.
All GTC cars were fitted with 1600 engines, but the ordinal engine has been lost.
With this project I offer 2 possible mechanical specifications. The first “standard” spec. comprises a complete 1600 engine with twin Weber carburettors and matching gearbox. This assembly is in running order and can be test driven. It can be supplied separately or fitted to the GTC. An original complete rear axle can also be supplied fitted or separately.
The second specification comprises the 2 litre engine, five speed gearbox and L/S/D rear axle from a 1983 Series 3 Alfa Spider. This assembly is also in running order and can be supplied fitted or separately.
In both cases the completed GTC shell is supplied in primer, with all glass, lights, indicators, bumpers, hood frame and grille. All mechanical components are present. The cards history is validated by original paperwork.
The car has always been red. The dark grey rear seats and interior panels are original. The tan front seats are not. The shield is missing from the front grille. I have 15”. alloy wheels (not shown in photographs ), but not the original 15” steel originals.
From the above it is clear price will vary with the alternatives set out above or with other possibilities with which I may be presented. Let me know if you could have some other combination in mind.
Interested parties are invited to view the car, raise questions and discuss their own suggestions.
